Proudly. Women of Haïti (2)

The burdens of everyday life are carried entirely on the backs of the women of Haiti. In a society essentially patriarchical and chauvinist, even to the point of violence, she is the family’s central pillar of the family unit. She works, takes charge of the children, of their education and socialization ; she labors to keep the dignity of the home.

Across these photos, I pay tribute to the women and girls I met in the streets of Haiti. To those who live and work in precarious conditions ; to those who fight the everyday strain with their dignity unspoiled, retaining a certain elegance, a certain allure, a fierce pride in the midst of a world in pandemonium. Through these photos, I would like, simply and candidly, to create an homage to their femininity and to their courage.

Tout le fardeau de la vie quotidienne repose sur le dos de la femme haïtienne. Dans une société essentiellement patriarcale et machiste, parfois violente à son égard, elle est la colonne vertébrale de la cellule familiale. Elle travaille, a la charge des enfants, de leur éducation et de leur scolarité, elle veille à maintenir sa maison digne.

À travers ces photos, je souhaite rendre hommage à ces femmes et à ces jeunes filles rencontrées dans les rues d’Haïti, à celles qui vivent et travaillent dans des conditions précaires ; à celles qui luttent au quotidien pour vivre dans la dignité et garder une certaine élégance, une allure, une fierté en dépit du chaos environnant. Par ces photos, j’aimerais simplement rendre hommage à leur courage et leur féminité.
